Food, Food, Food, what can I say,
the warm taste melts in your mouth you smile in delight
your mother slaps your hand as you sneak a piece of chicken into your mouth
around the table your family holds hands in harmony
you praise the food that lies on the table, thankful for what you have
dig in
joy and laughs fill the air
love is here

Guns, Germs, and Steel response chapter 14

1. Describe the difference between bands, tribes, chiefdom, and states.
Band- A band, is a nomadic society that consist of several dozen people. The relationship between the people is kin based. When it comes to the government, they make decisions through egalitarian leadership. They are not run by a bureaucracy. Food production is not a part of there economy, nor is division of labor.

Tribes- The first stage after band is tribe. The only major difference between the two is that a tribe is much larger. A tribe is made up of hundreds of people. They settle is usually only 1 village, and their basis of relationship is kin based. Like in a band, their government is not a bureaucracy, and their decision making leadership skills are egalitarian. Food production is a part of their economy. It was not at first but gradually they switched over.

Chiefdom- A chiefdom is slightly larger than a tribe (as it has thousands of people), but much larger than a band. Their settlement patter is in 1 or more villages. The basis of relationship is class and residence. The decision making leadership in the government is hereditary and centralized. Their bureaucracy levels are 1-2. Food production is a major part of their economy as it is very intensive. Another part of economy is the control of land, which is by the chief.

States- The biggest of all the different societies is states, which are consisting of 50,000 or more. Similar to chiefdom, their basis of relationship is class and residence. They are fixed in many villages and cities. Their government is centralized and it has many levels of bureaucracy. The economy is dependent on food production to an intensive extent.

2. What is something interesting - to you - that you take away from this chapter? Explain.

An interesting fact I learned in this chapter is one of the major reasons why states always triumph in wars with other societies (besides the fact that they are larger and far more advanced), is the official religions and patriotic fervor of many states make their troops willing to fight suicidally. We develop that willingness in schools, churches, and governments. Each country has its own slogan urging its citizens to be ready for death. what struck me about this, is that this statement is so true. The media and government are always encouraging citizens to fight for their country, but it is never their country they are fighting for.

Vocab Words

LABORIOUSLY- The pregnant woman in the picture above, is an example of someone who took on a very tiresome and painful task.

SITUATION- I thought this would be a good picture for situation, because the dog in the middle is kind of stuck in between.

INCANTATION- I chose this witch from Snow White because she put a strange incantation, or spell on this apple.

FUTILE- In the picture above, I am not trying to make the point that this child is dumb, but many schools and teachers tell kids that they are useless and will never make a difference in life. That really bugs me because I have been that kid and I knows how it feels.

ECSTASY- Whenever I look at this picture, I always think of ecstasy, because the expression on his face is not really delightful, but you could tell it was a spur of the moment thing.

TRANQUILITY- I chose this picture for tranquility because it is very soothing and I feel calm when I look at it.

AWKWARD- I chose this picture for awkward because this person is really clumsy.

AROMA- I chose this picture for aroma because scented candles give off a good fragrance.

Comics

Pickles

Brian Crane

Brian Crane is the creator and illustrator of the humorous comic series “Pickles”. The comic strip is built around the lives of an elderly couple, Earl Pickles and his wife, Opal. (The couple were inspired by Crane's in-laws.) They are in their 70s and have been married for over 50 years. Their daughter Sylvia, her husband, Dan, and their grandson Nelson, reside with them. Along with the huge family, Crane decided to add a few pets, Roscoe the dog and cat Muffin.

Brian Crane was born into a Mormon family in Idaho, during the year 1949. He and his family, moved to San Francisco when he was two years old. From childhood, he had always dreamt of creating his own comic strip, but that dream was put on hold for many years. Crane attended Brigham Young University. He graduated in 1973, with an art degree. After his graduation, he married Diana, who also attended Brigham. He began his career at advertising agencies, across the country. The two finally resided in Reno, Nevada along with their seven children. In his 40's Crane's Comic dream was finally taken of the shelf. He began to sketch older men and was fascinated by the many possibilities for humor. Crane decided to create a comic about older people. The Pickles comic strip was rejected three times by the syndicates. On the fourth, the Washington Post Writers Group used the cartoon in their newspaper. In 1990 Pickles made its debut in 24 newspapers. Now it appears in over 400 newspapers. In 1995 and 2001, Pickles was nominated for best comic strip of the year by the National Cartoonists Society, winning the coveted award in 2001.

There wasn't much significance in his methods of writing but I loved how he incorporated his life with his comics. For example, Crane was born into a Mormon family. Many fans do not know this, but the Pickles are Mormon. Crane does not exactly portray the idea but instead gives little clues like Mormon paintings or pictures in the background. Another example of this is he finally noticed that his wife "couldn't put on her eye makeup without sticking out her tongue. And so I used it in the strip, much to her chagrin." I really think this is a good technique, and it adds humor to the comic.

cheating

Well, personally I think cheating is wrong right of the bat, whether it be on a test or in a game. Although it is wrong, almost everyone has done it. In Mr. Ross's situation, I probably would have told on the student, because the way he was cheating, by taking advantage of that man, was just plain rude. (It really bugs me when people take advantage of other people).
If the situation was different, and I was a new student at the school, and the kid who was cheating was the most popular kid in school, then I probably wouldn't have told on the kid, in fear that I would not make any friends.

Animal Jail

There are several different animals whose domestication has been tried, and failed. Think zebras, cheetahs, grizzlies, etc. What are three different reasons a species might resist domestication? Explain, and give an example of each one. This section begins on the bottom of page 168.

There are three main reasons that a species might resist domestication, Diet, Growth Rate, and Problems with Captive Breeding.

Diet- When feeding an animal, the conversian of food biomass to the consumer's biomass involves an efficiancy of around 10%. Basically 10,000 pounds of corn can feed an animal, who's size is 10% of the amount of food they are consuming. To feed carnivores it is especially hard, because we would have to provide the animal with 10,000 pounds of meat to reach a size of only 1,000 pounds.

Growth Rate- Animals must be able to grow quickly. Two animals which would immediatley cross elephants and gorillas of the list. It would take at least 15 years for an elephant or gorilla's herd to reach only adult size.

Problems of Captive Breeding- To me, captive breeding is one of the greatest problems with domestication. Though we may not be aware of it, many animals are uncomfortable when having to mate under forceful conditions, or while being watched by groups of people. This was the main reason why we are not able to domesticate cheetahs. When captive, cheetahs have been known not to reproduce do to the methods of attracting mates. In the wild, the male would usually chasethe female for many days. The female would become sexually receptive and the two would mate. Being in a cage eliminates that routine.
